Alberta IBD Consortium Guiding Principles:
Goal
To understand the role that genetic, microbial & environmental factors play in the development of Inflammatory Bowel Disease.
Vision
To be a world leader in inflammatory bowel disease research and innovation and to make a meaningful impact on the lives of those affected by IBD.
How
The Alberta IBD Consortium will be a vital link between clinicians, researchers and patients across the province. This unique way of studying IBD will result in improved patient care and a better understanding of the causes of IBD.
Recent advances suggest that there are connections between our genetic traits, environment, and the microorganisms that live in our gut that may lead to the development of Crohn’s disease and ulcerative colitis. However, the manner in which these factors interact to cause IBD is still unclear. The members of the Alberta IBD Consortium are working together on several province-wide patient and laboratory-based studies that will expand our understanding of these interactions. Our team hopes that the knowledge generated from this research will provide new insights into the causes and determinants of these devastating diseases. This new knowledge may lead to the development of more effective treatments, and ultimately, preventing the development of IBD entirely.
