Background

The Alberta IBD Consortium believes that the combination of both clinical and basic science is key to unlocking potential causes, treatments and cures for IBD. Our research is divided up into two “Tiers” in order to help our team work together and share ideas. Tier 1 focuses on clinical and population-level research that will involve examining IBD patients and controls from across the province. Tier 2 focuses on laboratory-based studies that will examine the interactions of genes, environmental factors, and microbes in the development and clinical expressions of IBD.

The two Tiers of the program are designed to operate in a parallel, while also interacting and sharing ideas and findings. Discoveries from Tier 1 will feed into helping to direct studies performed in Tier 2 and in return, the findings from Tier 2 studies will identify potential relationships of interest to be investigated in Tier 1.
